The team from Erlangen was able to convince at the finals of this year’s Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot) and advanced to the round of the best 64 teams in Vienna – as it did last time in 2009(!). There it was eliminated against the later finalist. Overall, the team was able to hold its own in the competition with over 378 universities from 89 countries and achieved a pleasing 54th place.

Since the facts of the case were issued in early October 2022, the team has been working intensively on this year’s case, preparing a plaintiff’s brief and a defendant’s brief in English, one after the other, until January 2023. In preparation for the oral pleadings, the team visited various major law firms in Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. In addition, in preparation for the final in Vienna, the team attended pre-moots in Düsseldorf, Tbilisi (Georgia), Alexandria (Egypt), Erlangen and Belgrade (Serbia). Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors and our faculty, it was possible to waive a financial contribution from the participants.

This year’s team consisted of Benedikt Behrendt, Sarah Emmert, Maximilian Hübner, Nicolas Kiefer, Johannes Ohm and Karim Radoin. Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Robert Freitag, the team was coached by Martin Gronemann (former Chair Krajewski), Stefan Homm (Chair Freitag), Nick Jung (Chair Stamm), Jannick Preiwisch (Chair Kudlich) and Markus Weißenberger (Chair Schmolke).

The FAU team for the 30th Vis Moot

Benedikt Behrendt

Benedikt began studying law at FAU in the winter semester 2019/2020, where he also works as a student assistant for Prof. Dr. Kett-Straub. As part of his studies, he already completed numerous courses in the “Legal English Certificate Programme” and furthered his language training at the German-American Institute. Besides his studies, Benedikt continually gains practical experiences at the Refugee Law Clinic Erlangen by supporting refugees with free legal advice in the area of asylum and residence law. Since he is also very interested in the area of intellectual property law, he attends the corresponding specialisation courses at university and additionally works as a trainee in this area at a leading law firm. By participating in the Vis Moot, he aims in particular to deepen his language skills and to establish new contacts with prospective lawyers and practitioners.

Sarah Emmert

After Sarah had graduated from high school with top grade, she started her law studies at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in the winter semester 2019/2020. After several online semesters, she is even more excited about working with other students. That is the reason why she decided to take part in the Soldan Moot in her fourth semester. As she is convinced that Moot Courts are a great chance to acquire practical experiences that are not taught at university and to improve rhetorical skills. Therefore, she subsequently decided to participate at the Vis Moot as well. Sarah is curious to gain knowledge in international law and meeting students from around the world.

Maximilian Hübner

Maximilian began his law studies at FAU in the winter semester 2019/2020. As part of his studies, he is participating in the “Legal English Certificate Programme” to acquire specialist English skills related to law. Due to his general interest in both international law and the English language, the focus of his studies is on international and European public law. By participating in the Vis Moot, he hopes to deepen his knowledge of international law and also gain a lot of practical experience.

Nicolas Kiefer

Nicolas decided to study law at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in the winter semester 2019/2020. He has been working as a student assistant for Prof. Dr. Kett-Straub since November 2020. Due to his fascination for civil and commercial law, he expanded this position to the chair of Prof. Dr. Hofmann in August 2022, under whom he is also studying with a focus on intellectual property and competition law. In addition, he has been a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation since November 2021. His passion for foreign languages is particularly reflected in him completing the “Legal English Certificate Programme”. He would like to further develop these language skills by participating in the Vis Moot. He is especially looking forward to making many contacts with the legal community from all over the world.

Johannes Ohm

Johannes is a law student in his sixth semester at FAU. Prior to his studies, he served in the Germany Army during his voluntary military service. Alongside his studies, Johannes takes part in the “Legal English Certificate Programme”. He is currently employed at the Institute for General Medical Practice, where he works at the interface between law and medical science. Johannes considers the participation in the Vis Moot as a great opportunity to improve his advocacy skills in English. He looks forward to an eventful semester and is honoured to represent his university on the international stage.
